ARTIST STATEMENT

My recent work has been almost exclusively with the landscape of the Blue Mountains west of Sydney, Australia. I have tried to visually define and refine my relationship with this environment, a relationship shaped through long knowledge and a deep feeling for it as "home"

My approach stems from a desire for a fresh way of relating to the living environment and an awareness of it as a vigorous and autonomous entity in itself. In finding ways of signifying connection to landscape, I use the conventional position of " onlooker" with the artist/viewer "here" and the landscape "out there." As well as taking perspectives which allow greater psychological immersion in the landscape.

The imagery is superimposed and layered many times as I seek the necessary form of the perceptual filtered through the subjective. In the abstract "translation" series I have tried to " ask the subject what needs to be said", allowing the energy of the subject to leave its traces as a build up of linear markings. My recurring theme is relationship, between inner and outer realities, between humans and out environment, believing that we need to find ways to experience and interpret out interrelationship with our environment if we are to live in harmony with it.
