» PINBALLS & PIPE BOMBS «

I am a representational, expressionistic painter, and paint primarily with knives using fluid acrylic paint which I pour onto a horizontally placed canvas, and then spread about the surface. In this way I can achieve interesting effects as the paints mix on the canvas. No other representational painter has a surface resembling mine.

The photos of my work I am presenting are, for the most part, examples of my "bomb" and "pinball" paintings. The former paintings essentially deal with the topic of suicide, and I have attached facsimile pipe bombs to the frames of these pieces. The "pinball" paintings address the aggravations we all encounter in life. Aggravations which detour us from enjoying to the fullest the wonders life has to offer us.

Much of my current work is interactive, since it requires viewer participation with the piece to obtain the full experience of what the work has to offer. E.g., in the pinball pieces, one has to shoot a small wooden ball into a funnel, after which the ball rolls into and through the picture plane, careening off of sheet rock screws and springs before disappearing into a cup beneath the painting.

Style and Artistic Objectives

When I first began painting in 1981, I used oil paints and brush. In 1982, I gave up the brush for a knife, and primarily paint with a knife, using a brush only for details. I changed from oils to acrylics in 1983. The next year, I began developing the unique style which I now employ.

This style involves using very fluid acrylic paints which I often pour onto the canvas while it is in a horizontal position. I then spread this paint about with knives, and work other colors into or over these poured paints with my knife.

This technique enables me to achieve some very interesting effects when the fluid paints mix together, and results in a smooth final surface, even though it may be constructed from many layers.
I know of no one else who paints in this manner, or who achieves a surface remotely resembling mine.

Many of my early paintings were anecdotal, and often dealt with political, social, or psychological subjects.
My present work can be categorized as follows:

  • Urban landscapes, incorporating city skylines, neighborhoods, and expressways;
  • Earthscapes depicting large portions of the earth, sky and their relationship to the enveloping universe;
  • Math-Physics paintings in which I indulge my ongoing concern with the cosmos and things mathematical;
  • Music paintings inspired by classical works, with musical notation painted on the frames;
  • Landscape genesis paintings in which a landscape often modeled on human forms, is presented, with photos depicting the evolution of the painting mounted on the frame;
  • Bomb paintings, in which I either depict or discuss suicidal circumstances;
  • Pinball paintings, which are mixed media works in which a ”pinball“ can be ”dropped“ into the painting and allowed to careen through, colliding with screws and springs which have been attached to the painting.
