JOYCE WEINSTEIN
These are paintings about painting with each new work stemming from the one that went before. Weinstein strikes dynamic balances among opposites: painting and drawing, thick impasto and thin wash, dark color values and light hues, apparent spontaneity and actual control. Although the basic equation is always changing, her aim is a pictorial unity in which all these elements meld.

ARTIST STATEMENT
I strive for a complicated simplicity. My color, line and form; all are interchangable. None exist without the others. My art is the art of paradox... tense, yet flowing... soft, and strong... romantic, and tough.... formless, and structured.... simple and complex. In other words, a combination of impossibilities. Most important of all, is light.... made from a combination of varied surfaces.... washes, impasto, mixed media, contrasts and tonal variations... which (for me) is the life of all successful painting no matter what the subject.

BRIEF BIOGRAPHY
I have been exhibiting my work since the early 1950's in numerous one-person and group exhibitions... in galleries, universities and museums in New York City, throughout the country and in Canada and abroad.
My work is included in the permanent collections of many museums, universities and private collections... including The Museum of Modern Art, NYC; Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Philadelphia, PA; Edmonton Museum, Alberta, Canada; Weatherspoon Art Museum, Greensboro, NC; the Hines Collection, Boston, MA; Ciba Geigy Collection, Ardsley, NY, and others.
I have had one-person exhibitions in Flanders Contemporary Art, Minneapolis, MN, 2005; Gallery One, Toronto, 2002; Harmon-Meek Gallery, Naples, FL, 2000; Meredith Long & Co. Gallery, Houston, TX, 1990... and others.
I have received many favorable reviews and articles throughout the years I have been exhibiting... ie the New York Times (by Grace Glueck and Hilton Kramer), Arts Magazine, Art in America, Art News, Artforum, New York Magazine, Partisan Review, The New York Post, and others.
