ARTIST'S STATEMENT I make 3-D paintings that I call ìconstructionsî. I have for years made abstract paintings where using color, as well as other painting tools such as line and texture, I created depth and indicated planes. This evolved into cutting wood into those planes, then collaging them by stacking and angling them. Next I painted these wall reliefs to enhance, parallel or sometimes contradict the physical space I had created. Subsequently, I wanted to be able to curve and bend the foundational forms and began welding steel for the bases. Initially I built dimensional foundations for my paintings as an experiment, pitting the visual strength of real space against the illusion of painted depth. Which held greater sway with the viewer, depth created by paint or true dimension? Over time constructions have simply become my language. I visually have a 3-D sensibility, almost unconsciously filtering what I see into planes and angles. It is at this fertile intersection of 2 and 3-D that my work takes form. |
